My Favorite Stay in Hermosa Beach, CA : The Beach House Hermosa Beach

Winter is in full swing on the East Coast. So when my sister asked me to join her on a work trip to California, I accepted before she could finish her sentence! Trading moody, cold dark days for sunny warm skies is just what I needed! We decided to spend the weekend in Los Angeles since she was working in San Diego the rest of the week. I found the Perfect boutique hotel right on the sand in gorgeous Hermosa Beach.

The Beach House Experience

Hermosa Beach is the quintessential California beach town. One of the three beach cities in what Los Angeles refers to as the “South Bay” and with a population of less then 21,000 people…it is the perfect getaway when in the big city. Only minutes from LAX lies this little gem known for its surfing, volleyball and fun nightlife. We stayed at the beautiful Beach House Hotel Hermosa, the only beachfront property in Hermosa Beach. Our room looked out towards the strand and gave us spectacular sunset views, and my favorite…views of the surfers early in the morning.

I Highly recommend staying here. The rooms are beautiful and cozy with views of the ocean, spa hot tubs and fireplaces in each room. There are fantastic restaurants nearby but if you want an intimate evening in, their kitchenettes are perfect! Location is also perfect for an event ie birthday or bachelorette party. The property has three separate event spaces and a spa!

Hermosa Cyclery

We only had a two day stay in Hermosa, but it felt like a week of relaxation. We arrived early in the afternoon on a Saturday, and of course our first stop had to be to In and Out Burger. After we checked into our room, we went out and explored. The hotel recommended bike rides on the strand, which we loved! Hermosa Cyclery was great! They gave us really comfortable beach cruisers with baskets and we rode all the way to Manhattan Beach, which is one of the sister beach cities up the coast. I always prefer to support small businesses when I travel or even here at home. This bike shop has a really cool history. The owner opened the shop in 1974 and when he passed in 2002, he left the shop to four employees who worked for him in the 70s and 80s. They are very accommodating and will pick up and drop off the bikes if you need it. Lucky for us, they were right next to our hotel!

Dining and Nightlife

We got back to Hermosa Beach just in time for sunset. Some of the prettiest I’ve seen. California always has the prettiest sunsets, especially in the Fall and Winter. We grabbed a quick drink to watch the sunset before dinner. We met up with friends at Alta House upstairs from Abigaile on the pier and noshed on a few appetizers and drinks. Still hungry, we opted to head to Fritto Misto a locally owned Italian cafe. It was delicious, the wine and pasta were flowing…I highly recommend it, it was delicious and the ambiance was warm and friendly. We then headed to Palmilla Cocina and Tequila which was absolutely beautiful inside and had a great selection of premium tequilas. Their margaritas were absolutely delicious! Like I said before, if you’re staying locally, Hermosa Beach has a fun nightlife and we fully took advantage of that.

Needless to say, we had a late start the next morning. We took it easy and had breakfast at my favorite spot on the strand Good Stuff. This place delivered to our hotel, but we decided to take the less than 3 minute walk there. With outdoor seating on the strand, there’s nowhere else I would want to do breakfast at when in the South Bay. A family run business since 1979, they always have consistent delicious food and drinks. Typical California goodness, like breakfast tacos, burritos and healthier options as well. I encourage you to check out their menu. We really enjoyed our meal and our mimosas that morning.

We spent the rest of the morning/early afternoon walking around town and relaxing on the beach. Hermosa has some pretty interesting murals and you can find a list of them here if you’re into street art.

For our last night, we had reservations at Tower 12 . A laid back upscale pub with a decent list of brews on draft as well as yummy bites. Service lacked a bit that evening, at least that was our experience. For our night cap we headed north to Manhattan Beach to The Strand House which had an impressive wine list and an absolutely beautiful interior/exterior. We sat outside listening to the waves crash against the Manhattan Beach Pier, and later took a walk on it before calling it a night.

All in all, just the perfect little getaway to escape the miserable winter at home. If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Southern California, look no further than Hermosa Beach…it is The Best place to stay. Neighborhood feels in the big city with an absolutely gorgeous coastline, world class restaurants and great nightlife. I can’t wait to return, the waves are calling my name.
